Painting on Glass at Berlin Glas e.V.

14.02.2017

Berlin Glas e.V. is a non-profit association that gives German and international, professional artists and students the opportunity to work with hot glass in Berlin.  Our goal is to inspire, educate and offer research opportunities for people interested in glass as a medium for artistic expression.

Berlin Glas, e.V.´s mission is to share the art and skill of making art with glass with the public and provide a resource to artists of all media. The underlying message that working in collaboration with international artists who work with various media doesn’t just broaden someone’s artistic capacity, but actually creates a culture of peace.

In the five years since we opened the doors, Berlin Glas, e.V. has grown into an internationally recognized institution, collaborating with universities in Ireland and Australia, working with renowned artists, such as Mona Hatoum, Jeppe Hein and Karin Sander, establishing a youth programme and most recently teaching in the sculpture department at the Kunsthochschule Weißensee. We provide a dynamic and friendly studio located in Reinickendorf, on the boarder of Wedding and Pankow, and within walking distance from the Bildhauerwerkstatt and Ufer Studios. The studio team is composed of graduate-level international artists who are excited to share their knowledge and skills. We teach classes for beginners and intermediates in glass blowing, painting on glass, kiln forming and small-scale casting.

Painting on Glass with Lucia Santini

Painting on Glass with Lucia Santini

Teacher’s presentation:
Lucia Santini was born in Murano in 1960. She started to work with glass when she was 15 painting the micro bottles her father made, as he was a glass maker in a factory, a hot shop, and a torch worker. Lucia would then resell the painted bottles in shops around the islands. When she completed her studies, she went to work in a laboratory for glass painting and started to learn the first elements of the true traditional use of glass enamels. She has since worked in various studios to learn as many different techniques as she could. Nowadays, Lucia works in her own studio in Murano, often collaborating with artists such as Lucio Bubacco and Emilio Santina. She has taught Venetian Glass Painting techniques at The Corning Studio N.Y., as well as in private studios.
