Boat Building, Woodworking & Furniture making course at Boat Building Academy

Cours de durée de 3 jours à 38 semaines en construction navale, traitement du bois, fabrication de mobilier et autres. Notres cours conviennent à toute tranche d’âge, de 18 ans à 80 ans.

The Boat Building Academy was founded in 1997 in Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK.  They offer courses from 3 days to 38 weeks in boat building, woodworking, furniture making and more.  Whether you want to work in the marine or woodworking industry, learn new practical skills, sharpen existing ones or take a break from your ‘real’ life, our courses suit anyone from eighteen to eighty.

The Boat Building Academy course programme:
  • 38 week Boat Building course
  • 12 week Woodworking and Furniture Making course
  • 3-5 day short courses

Except for one or two classroom-based short courses training at the Academy is intensive and highly practical, with at least 90% of students’ time spent in the workshop.
In addition to gaining expertise in the practice and underpinning theory of boat building and woodworking skills some students also have the opportunity to build or restore their own boats or furniture as part of the 38 week Boat Building or 12 week Woodworking and Furniture Making course.  Few places in the world offer this as part of a recognised qualification.  The value to students is immense; they work through the entire process from ordering plans, wood selection, setting up, building the boat or piece of furniture and painting and finishing ready for the final launch / exhibition, project managing from start to finish.  The Academy offers an unparalleled depth and breadth of practical experience.
Graduates of short and longer courses go on to start new careers and new businesses across the world.  Please see the website for case studies, testimonials, a prospectus and much more.

The Short Course programme features craft courses in Marquetry, Antique Furniture Making as well as Basic Woodworking, Modern and Traditional Boat Building and much more.

38 week Boat Building, Maintenance and Support course

The 38 week Boat Building, Maintenance and Support course, incorporating City & Guilds 2463 Level 3 Diploma in Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance (the technical certificate of an apprenticeship) is our flagship course.  It gives students the skills to find jobs in the marine industry or establish themselves as boat builders in their own right, although some students join the course for a sabbatical or on retirement and have no plans to work in the marine industry.  There is the opportunity for some students to build their own boat as part of the course.

12 week Woodworking Skills incorporating Furniture Design and Making

‘Woodworking Skills incorporating Furniture Design and Making’ gives people a solid, certificated foundation (and more) in wood and working with wood.  Students design and make a piece of furniture as part of the course.  The course and its Level 3 qualification are exclusive to the Boat Building Academy.  A maximum of ten people are accepted onto each course.

Although the course has nothing to do with boats, it follows the principles that have built the Academy’s reputation as a world-leading vocational training college; students spend the majority of their time at their workbenches, learning by hands-on experience of making.  Many graduates have started their own business or now work in the woodwork industry.
