Fine Furniture Designer/Maker and Antique Furniture Restorer
Commissioned by Sotheby’s, Christie’s, St Paul’s Cathedral and the National Trust to work on priceless antiques, John has vast experience both in fine furniture making and antique restoration. His many clients include BADA dealers, private clients and he has recently completed work on the intricate marquetry panels for an entire Pullman carriage currently being restored by the Bluebell Steam Railway in East Sussex. John was awarded the City & Guilds of London Institute First Prize for Advanced Studies in Furniture for Furniture-Making and Antique Restoration. He was presented with the City & Guilds Silver Medal of Excellence, the highest possible award.
John runs popular cabinet making and antique furniture restoration courses at his own workshops on Ditchling Common, East Sussex and has also lectured short courses at Dictum in Germany, West Dean College and The Building Crafts College in London. He regularly gives demonstrations at the European Woodworking Show, The Festival of The Tree, Axminster Power Tools, Felder UK and Bentley Woodfair. When his diary allows, he gives short talks to various woodworking groups around the country.He regularly contributes articles to Furniture & Cabinetmaking magazine, his latest series of educational articles is on techniques entitled ‘Our Correspondent’.
A collection of John’s furniture restoration articles written for Furniture and Cabinetmaking magazine was published by GMC under the title ‘Furniture Restoration a professional at work’ and is available for purchase at £14.95 inc. P&P. John is a full member of The British Antique Furniture Restorers’ Association.
Over the 25 years John has been running a successful bespoke furniture making and antique restoration business he has become passionate about passing on the skills and knowledge through his woodworking courses. John offers a complete range of short training courses in furniture & cabinet making skills, antique furniture restoration, traditional hand finishing, veneering & laminating and wood machining that have traditional hand skills at their core, the key requirement being simply enthusiasm and a thirst for knowledge.
